Unless you're a thin individual, chances are you have experienced frustration with getting the barbell into position when performing barbell hip thrusts with a thick bar pad. Essentially, you can barely (or you can't) roll the bar over your thighs. Then when you pull your feet back to get into proper position, the pressure on your lower abs and bladder is gruelling.
We circumvented this problem at Glute Lab by rolling the loaded barbell onto 1.5 inch rubber mats, and this worked very well for the time being. But the problem with this fix is that the rubber mats are hard to come by, and it's hard to roll the bar onto the mats when you get very strong and have several plates on each side of the bar.
For this reason, we decided to make Hip Thruster plates, which are an extra 3 inches in diameter compared to standard plates. Even if you have big thighs and are using a squat sponge, you can comfortably get into position and get your thrust on. No more awkwardness!
An added benefit is that the plates naturally serve as a "jack" or elevated loading pin in that you can pile on additional weight with ease.
A final advantage of the Hip Thruster plates is that you can perform "block pulls" with them without any blocks. The 1.5 inch elevation is great for people with limited hip flexion mobility who can't get into proper deadlift position without rounding their low back.
